Brunch 2 Bomb is a 21 and over event marketed toward the Black millennial who may like to go to the club, but wants a more laid back experience and daytime fun. The organizers of the event describe it as 'a “Sunday Funday” unlike the typical “Hollywood” experience in LA'. Brunch 2 Bomb events last all afternoon and usually end around 5pm, so there is plenty of time to enjoy yourself, meet other people, network, and dance.
The venue for March 2019’s event was "Free play," a restaurant and bar in Downtown Los Angeles. Upon arrival, you could see people waiting outside in line. The event is first come-first serve until they reach capacity and there are no refunds, so I recommend arriving early. Also, the event organizers suggest ridesharing, which I can agree with. It could make the difference between getting in at a reasonable time or not. There was a lot of people in the group I went in, so to avoid the hassle of worrying about parking or designated drivers, we came on a party bus.
Brunch 2 Bomb has themes that are usually based around popular movies and shows from the 90s, from “Coming to America” and “House Party” to “A Different World” and “Family Matters.” The theme of the event I went to was the “Waiting to Exhale Edition.” Clips from the movie were played on the many screens around the upper floor (my friend paid for us to get into VIP), but little else from the movie theme came into play.
Now, there is the selling point. Brunch. By that I mean mimosas. In VIP, the brunch buffet is $35 dollars and the bottomless mimosa bar is $25. Buying them together is $50 dollars. If you are in VIP, the brunch buffet disappears after a while, so make sure you get your money's worth. Unfortunately, I was not dazzled by the food at the buffet. Not for $35. It was semi-cold when I got it, and it had only really been an hour since the event opened. The food was not any more special than other places I've had breakfast (I don’t know if it is because of the event catering or the restaurant itself), but there were a few sides that were well seasoned, like the greens and the potatoes. Some items, such as the eggs, were not. There was no salt or pepper to be found, so I had to go ask for some, and the employee had to go on an adventure to find them. At the event, there was still food that can be bought downstairs, for cheaper, but it was clear that mingling and drinking was the main focus of the event.
Brunch 2 Bomb has only been going for about a year and a half, but I have heard that it is not uncommon for big names to show up at the event including rappers, comedians, and even politicians. Maxine Waters made an appearance at the March event. I didn’t get to see her up close, unfortunately, but one of my friends got to take a picture with her! When she got on the mic, she had some important things to say, but she kept it short and fun.
On the lower floor, there was a dance floor packed to capacity. The DJ played songs from the 90s and some throwbacks to the early 2000s, the occasional new song, and some cookout music, but I only heard one song that came from the movie that inspired theme. That song was ‘Not gon cry’ by Mary J. Blige.
All afternoon is a long time to be at an event, so Free Play also has arcade games on the top floor, such as pinball, fighting games, and shooting games, which provide a small break from dancing. If you want to step outside to get away from the party for a moment, there are vendors selling merchandise such as handmade jewelry, apparel, and spiritual cleansing type goods, such as incense.
I would recommend attending Brunch 2 Bomb with friends if you are looking for a fun Sunday out. If you are interested, make sure to pre-order tickets because the events sell out quickly.
